I think actual history well written appeals to boys. That is what they tend to read as adult men.

But real history, not those horrible 'history' books put out by the educational/industrial complex.

This is extremely true. When I was in college I took courses in which part of the analysis was that women mature more quickly than men emotionally and psychologically, and that when this is combined with physiological change such as through hormones the result is young women who are more physically and emotionally evolved surrounded by young men who are not. This dovetailed and was adjacent the timely assumption that a man with an opportunity is a potential rapist. In essence the argument being made was that because women grew up faster both physically and mentally that they would control themselves, but young men who were both biologically and mentally retarded in the developmental sense just couldn't help themselves. They were potential rapists, and they would always be potential rapists. It was just innate biology and subconscious psychology.

This always struck me as B.S. because it assumed guilt while also removing culpability. Men had no agency, and the very notion of women being complicit or having agency of their own was unthinkable. By extension your writing here suggests a similar presumption. "Men don't read" because the preferences of educators and institutions have to be reaffirmed. Then when someone does real research they discover that men do read, they do have agency, but that the nature of men and women is that while they may be equal in execution they are different in action and motivation. Its not that men don't read, its that society doesn't want them to be readers.
